  • The Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety (CSPS) - Promoting Surgical Patient Safety

By Emily Butera, BA, Professional Practice and State Government Affairs Coordinator

The Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety (CSPS) is a multidisciplinary coalition of professional organizations whose members participate in the care of surgical patients. The CSPS, which promotes excellence in patient safety in the surgical and perioperative environment, is committed to collaboration and effective communication among all team members involved in perioperative care. Its goal is to bring the surgical team together to improve patient safety. Seven professional organizations are members of CSPS, sharing the same vision of a world in which all patients receive the safest surgical care provided by an integrated team of dedicated professionals. American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology (AANA) is one of those organizations, currently represented by Tom McKibban, CRNA, MS who serves as Chair, and Bruce Weiner, DNP, MSNA, CRNA.

As a part of its 2021 strategic plan, the CSPS capitalized on the responsibility to address issues of policies and operating procedures that impact patient safety. Completed initiatives include supporting the Joint Commission on its “Speak Up Campaign for Patient’s Safety” and presenting on safety culture and workplace civility at the 2021 ASPAN National Conference.

The CSPS continues to develop safe surgery resources for both the patient and the perioperative team, including resources addressing patient monitoring, transfer of care, the opioid epidemic, and racial and ethnic equality. To learn more about these resources, visit the CSPS website The organization plans to continue to support a culture of patient safety and a caring perioperative workplace environment through the development of additional resources, such as position statements, guidelines, and expert opinions to aid in the surgical and perioperative environment.
