  • AANA Updates Considerations for Adding New Activities to Individual CRNA Scope of Practice

At their  November meeting, the AANA Board of Directors approved the updated Considerations for Adding New Activities to Individual CRNA Scope of Practice.  Nurse anesthesia is a dynamic profession and throughout their careers, CRNAs will incorporate new techniques and technologies into their practice based on new scientific evidence, patient safety needs, and technological innovations that improve patient outcomes. The decision to add a new activity is complex and based on considerations unique to the individual CRNA, facility, and state where they practice. This document is intended to provide the CRNA with a tool to conduct an analysis of whether a specific procedure or technique is related to anesthesia, sedation, pain management, or related nursing services that are within the individual CRNA’s scope of practice.
